RIM to outperform Google's $900M bid for Nortel patents

Amidst the wave of competition, RIM is mulling to outdo Google by bidding highest on the Nortel patents. According to a latest piece of information, RIM’s new move to spend more than Google's $900 million for the control of patents for 4G and wireless video would shake the entire mobile industry.

The maker of BlackBerry smartphones is in two minds before going ahead with the bidding. Insiders revealed that either RIM will bid alone for the patents or it may go for a joint bid with other companies to stop the search giant from purchasing all 6,000 Nortel patents and patent applications.

Whatever be the case, if RIM goes successful in its mission then it could be a potential threat for other companies as it can use the patents against them. Companies that use mobile phones may have to pay RIM a royalty for certain wireless technology or just face a threat of lawsuit.

Nortel went bankrupt in 2009 and its patent sale was intended to help raise capital so that it could come out of bankruptcy.

Let’s hope Google is not sitting quite and would fight back to retain its control over Nortel patents.
